Bing-Shen HUANG MD

Radiation oncologist specialized in head and neck cancers, liver cancers, and lung cancers

Liver and upper GI cancers, Nasopharyneal cancer and head and neck cancers

Profile

Cancer is one of the major threatening disease for human. Cancer therapies comprise of surgery, radiation therapy and systemic therapy. In past days, the toxicities of radiation therapy have made it suffering for cancer patients. With the advances of technology, the emergence of intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, and volumetric modulated arc therapy have increased the accuracy and dose conformity. Proton therapy, staring from 2015 at CGMH, has brought the level of radiation therapy at Taiwan to higher level. Common radiation side effects for head and neck cancers have been greatly alleviated by proton therapy. Patients’ benefit by taking less pain killers or decreasing the need for nasogastric tube feeding. The quality of life has been improved greatly.

For proton therapy of hepatoma, the disease control rate even increased dramatically. Hepatoma patients, who are not suitable for surgery or radaiofrequency ablation because of large tumors or poor liver function, can now benefit from the advanced proton therapy. The tumor control rate at CGMH for hepatoma patients receiving curative proton therapy is 95%, which is an impressive benchmark. Proton therapy also benefits for patients with wide range of ages and performance status and indeed opens another therapeutic window for inoperable hepatoma patients.

Specialty

Liver and upper GI cancers, Nasopharyneal cancer and head and neck cancers

Success Cases

More than 800 cases of head neck cancers and more than 500 cases of hepatoma. Among hepatoma patients receiving curative proton radiation since proton therapy started from 2015 at CGMH, control rate is 95%.
