Research

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital continuously strives to improve and advance its medical treatments and technologies. Our hospital collaborates with a variety of organizations including the National Science Committee, National Sanitation Institute, the Department of Health of the Executive Yuan, and Chang Gung University. Every year, the hospital's accomplishments are recognized in countless national and international scientific journals. Our researchers, many of whom have received national and international awards, have made great strides in the advancement of genetic engineering, type B hepatitis, organ transplants, and cardiovascular diseases, to name a few.

1998
Craniofacial team performs reconstructive surgery on Arfu, a Vietnamese child with craniofacial anomalies.

2000
Ophthalmology Department Chief, Jui-Fang Tsai and Chang Gung University Professor Jan-Kan Chen successfully apply and transplant corneal stem cells cultured on amniotic membrane into a patient suffering from cornea injuries. Their medical findings were published and released in the New England Magazine.

2002
Children's Hospital Deputy Director Hsun-Chiu Cheng discovers drug resistance mechanism in cholera salmonella's resistance against ciprofloxacin. His research was released in the New England Magazine.

2003
Division of Nephrology Professor Ja-Liang Lin along with his fellow physicians develop a lead detoxication treatment, which reverses kidney deterioration caused by environmental low-thickness lead exposure and improves kidney function in chronic kidney patients. Their accomplishment were published and selected as New England Magazine's premier paper.

Division of Plastic Surgery receives Vincent, a patient from Burkina Faso, for Neurofibromatosis treatment.

Doctor Wan-Hung Chung's paper "Medical Genetics: A Marker for Stevens-Johnson Syndrome" takes coverage on Nature's April 1, 2004 issue.

Division of Infectious Diseases Doctor Ching-Tai Huang's paper "Role of LAG-3 in regulatory T Cells" takes coverage on Nature Immunology's May issue.

Children's Hospital Deputy Director Cheng-Hsun Chiu and his research team partake in the International Trichomonas Vaginalis Genome Sequencing Project. Their research took coverage on the Science Magazine's January 2007 issue.

2010
Results of Division of Neurosurgery Director Kuo-Chen Wei's awake craniotomy are praised and published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), and labeled "an important milestone in the study of brain tumor therapy".

2011
Professor Ming-Huei Cheng and his breast reconstruction team successfully achieve the first autologous breast reconstruction, by obtaining and dividing the lower abdominal tissue into two: 2/3 of the flap is used for breast reconstruction, and the remainder 1/3 is buried under the breast tissue for scarless breast augmentation purposes. This unique technique was published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has been honored as the cover issue in Dec, 2011.

Division of Plastic Reconstructive Microsurgery Professor Ming-Huei Cheng performs lymph node flap transplant to the foot on patient with lower-limb primary lymphedema. His accomplishments was published in the Gynecologic Oncology Journal's July, 2012 Issue.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Professor Chyi-Long Lee with his gynecologic endoscopy team, Drs. Chih-Feng Yen, Hsuan Su, and Kai Yun Wu, develop and perform scarless hysterectomy and adnexal surgery through NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluninal Endoscopy Surgery). This world-first case study was published in the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology and received worldwide recognition.
